DescriptionAn advertising photographer as well as a fine-art photographer, Paul Outerbridge was a master of the complex “carbro” color process that was the favored process in the 1930s and 1940s for color images destined for the printed pages of magazines. While color photography signaled “commercial” and black-and-white signaled “art,” Outerbridge believed that the sharp and vividly hued prints that attracted the public in advertising could be just as appealing in traditional art genres such as portraiture, still life, or studies of the nude. Here, he assembled objects that reference the seaside town of Deauville, France, with its Grand Casino and luxurious beaches—the gleaming roulette ball, smooth die, ridged seashell, and painted seascape—all set within a frame like a Surrealist diorama.
