DescriptionPaul
Strand’s close-up, dramatically lit portrait of his friend and fellow
photographer, 22-year-old Venezuelan Kurt Baasch, was made at a pivotal point
in Strand’s development as he began to move from a soft-focus Pictorialism to a
bolder, more direct modernism. Baasch’s own photographs, displayed that same
year in a major one-person show at the Camera Club of New York, mirrored
Strand’s fascination with the activities and geometries of modern urban life.
