At the corner of Horatio and Washington in Greenwich
Village, a barrel placed over an open fire hydrant directs water upward, creating
the perfect public sprinkler to provide relief from a hot summer day in New
York City. Ruth Orkin photographed this moment of chaotic childhood excitement
and maternal multitasking only a few buildings down from the apartment at 88
Horatio Street where she lived from 1945 to 1950.
