DescriptionComing from a line of photographers, Lotte Jacobi managed her father’s Berlin photography studio from 1927 to 1935. Influenced by developing modernist trends on either side of the Atlantic, Jacobi gained a reputation for her portraiture of celebrities and cultural figures passing through the city. It was during this period that Jacboi photographed the Russian dancer Niura Norskaya, creating this iconic, closely cropped picture of the dancer’s face set before her dark, oversized hat. Jacobi later fled Berlin as the Nazis rose to power and opened a new studio in New York.
