often as an analogy to creative photography…. The structure of language and the
choices that poetry offers to a person wishing to express ideas verbally are
very similar, I think, to the visual possibilities and options that a
photographer has.” Robert Heinecken’s training and early experience were in
printmaking, and his later work usually contains sufficient handwork that makes
its photographic content difficult to recognize. He uses readymade photographs
such as the ones found in magazines and advertisements, and collages them in an
intricate manner, often three-dimensionally. Utterly disinterested in
photography’s inherited mission to convey reality or the preexisting notion of
photography as a fine art, Heinecken positioned photography as a voyeur in the
contemporary society saturated with images.
