Assembled from appropriated photographs and invented text, Robert Heinecken’s Socio-Duo-Habliment Studies present fictious accounts from the “Institute for Socio-Duo-Habliment Studies” as it documents its workshops designed to examine the effect of clothing and fashion choices on the interpersonal dynamics of couples. The images are sourced from catalogues that Heinecken has rephotographed and arranged alongside his own text. Heinecken’s satirical and humorous arrangement of text and image offers a critique of the gender and relationship stereotypes that predominate the visual culture of American consumerism.
