This portrait of an intriguing young woman was produced at a
moment when French photographers aimed to capture the vibrancy and modern
culture of the nation. During the Second Empire (1852–1870), a thriving economy
and a massive program of public works turned Paris into the envy of the entire
world. Pierre Petit captured the energy of that era in his portraits. Though
unnamed, this sitter was photographed with a surprisingly modern hairstyle and
appearance. Her determined stare and clear profile suggest the strength of her
character.
