Object Type
profusion of travel images in the later 19th century catered to tourists and armchair
travelers alike as souvenirs and neverbeforeseen glimpses of farflung
locations. Though 19th century Nuremberg was not a particularly exotic
location, its medieval architecture was strikingly different than contemporary
Paris, which was being razed and radically rebuilt in a modern manner. French
photographer Léon Gérard’s prints, like this one of Nuremberg’s market square,
satisfied the growing interest in the medieval past, even as Paris moved
rapidly into the modern age.
Provenance[Lunn Ltd., New York]; purchased by Manfred Heiting, the Manfred Heiting Collection, March 11, 1982; given to MFAH, 2004.
