Description

Still operative when this photograph was made, the mid-15th-century Crane Tower is now a defining symbol of Gdańsk and a reminder of the city’s commercial heyday. With two enormous human-powered hamster wheels inside—augmented later with a second pair—the Crane could lift more than two tons of cargo off ships docked at its side. With a boat and quaiside storefronts in the foreground and the city’s centuries-old granaries in the back, this photographer has given a picturesque image of the historic port. After near total destruction in World War II, the Crane and granaries have been rebuilt as the National Maritime Museum.
