DescriptionJoseph Meeks established his furniture business in New York in 1797. It continued through two subsequent generations of his family, finally closing in 1869. By 1820, the firm was sufficiently successful to open a warehouse in New Orleans. In 1836, the elder Meeks retired, leaving his sons John and Joseph to operate the business. They maintained the New Orleans warehouse until 1839, but continued to market their goods in the South after its closure. Given its long history, the firm produced furniture in a range of styles, including Rococo Revival such as this sofa.
