Description

Within the Photo League there were smaller “Groups” that
worked together photographing single-issue subjects such as housing, labor, immigration,
and war. One of the earliest group projects was Harlem Document. Led by the more senior photographer Aaron Siskind,
the group included Lucy Ashjian, Harold Corsini, Morris Engel, Beatrice
Kosofsky, Richard Lyon, Jack Manning, Sol Prom, Miller Simon, and the writer
Michael Carter; they met weekly to discuss photographic assignments and project
goals. Taken in Harlem’s streets, homes, dance halls, and businesses, as a
whole, Harlem Document brings to life
a struggling but vibrant community.
