ProvenanceSophie Fraikin-Devis (Antwerp, 1838–Brussels, 1919), Brussels, likely acquired directly from the artist, by 1899 [1]; André Devis (1888–1948), Brussels, possibly by gift, by 1919 [2]; Georgette Chabry Devis (Mme. André Devis, m. 1920; Saint-Jean-d'Angély, France, 1894–Brussels, 1974), by descent, 1948 [3]; purchased by George E. Mathysen-Gerst (d. Geneva, 2015), by 1974 [4]; [sold by him, Sotheby's, London, “Impressionist and Modern Art, Evening Sale,” 5 February 2002, lot 3, illus. in color]; purchased by Mrs. Audrey Jones Beck, 2002; given to MFAH, 2002.

[1] Sophie Fraikin-Devis was the half-sister of Evenepoel’s mother, Anna. As “Mme. S. Fraikin,” she is listed as the painting’s owner in Lambotte (1908). A patron of Evenepoel, Fraikin-Devis’s date of acquisition is unknown but was likely prior to the artist’s death in 1899. Information about the Devis family, including a family tree, was kindly provided by Astrid Herkens, Research associate, Musée d'Ixelles. Email to Julia May Boddewyn, dated 13 September 2024.

[2] After Fraikin-Devis, the next known owner of the painting is her grandson, André Devis, who was the son of her daughter Marguerite Fraikin (1860–1940). Because Marguerite’s name does not appear in the provenance, however, the painting may have been a gift from Fraikin-Devis to her grandson prior to her death in 1919. André Devis is listed as the owner in the 1942–43 Brussels exhibition, where his surname is written “De Vis.”

[3] Per label on reverse for the exhibition: 1953 Antwerp.

[4] This was the seller in 2002, described in the auction catalogue simply as a “gentleman.” This is likely George E. Mathysen-Gerst, per the label on the reverse that bears his name, a New York- and Geneva-based art dealer and collector. The provenance in the catalogue notes that the seller acquired the work from André Devis, although it must have been his widow who was his source.
