Description

This Reticulárea—which translates as an “area of tiny nets”—was specifically conceived for the International Textile Biennale held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1975. It is one of the largest of a series of flexible hanging “net” pieces produced by Gego between 1969 and 1976. This work is obviously not intended to be viewed as an installation, but rather as something suspended from the ceiling like a transparent mesh or metal tapestry. The format sets it distinctly apart from the rest of Gego's “spiderwebs” and makes it a transitional piece, leading to the highly innovative “drawings without paper” that Gego produced in the 1980s.
