A pioneer and lifelong artist, Imogen Cunningham adapted to the times. She joined the art movements of Pictorialism and Surrealism and was a founding member of f.64, a progressive photo group pursuing sharp focus and fine details within photography. To pay for her artistic endeavors, she ran a successful photographic studio and pursued her own art in off-hours. This photograph, taken of her new husband Roi Partridge on Washington State’s Mount Rainier, was considered provocative at the time. For Cunningham, however, it symbolized a new life of possibility with a supportive partner.
ProvenanceAnne Wilkes Tucker, Houston; given to MFAH, 1980.
