DescriptionBetween 1832 and 1834, the German Prince Maximillian of Wied and the Swiss artist Karl Bodmer journeyed along the Missouri River recording that area’s natural and ethnographic history. One of the native peoples they lived with and studied was the Mandan tribe, which until that time had been little known. Bodmer’s detailed composition The Interior of the Hut of a Mandan Chief is recognized for both its artistic sensibilities and for being an informative pictorial document of the natives’ culture. Upon the expedition’s return to Europe, Prince Maxmillian’s written account and Bodmer’s watercolor renderings were published in German, as well as French and English editions.
