DescriptionBorn in Gloucester, the son of a sailmaker, noted marine artist Fitz Henry Lane had first-hand knowledge of the workings of the busy shipbuilding and fishing port. He was largely self-taught as an artist and trained as a lithographer in Boston in the early 1830s. He returned to Gloucester in 1848, concentrating on painting. This lithograph depicts a wide variety of vessels in the harbor, from small fishing boats to larger oceangoing ships.
