DescriptionAn
aspiring writer, Eluard Luchell McDaniel left an abusive home in Mississippi
and worked his way across the United States to San Francisco. There, he met Consuelo
Kanaga, a social activist with strong opinions matched only by her photographic
talent. The two formed a fast friendship, and McDaniel came to live with Kanaga
and her family. In this portrait, he lounges in the grass as if lost in a
daydream, gently pressing his inks-tained hands to his cheeks. This intimate
portrait asserts McDaniel’s status as a writer and reveals the collaborative
relationship between two creative friends.
