Description

This panel was once part of a portable screen and was most likely used in imperial encampments. Similar scarlet panels enclosing the emperor's tent are depicted in royal paintings. Mughal rulers spent a significant amount of time in camps, from hunting trips to inspection tours of the provinces and military campaigns, and their elaborate pavilions were just as luxurious and opulent as their palaces. The floral composition set in a niche evokes similar decorative schemes in court settings as seen on marble inlays, carved sandstone panels, and carpets.
