DescriptionBlue and white Chinese export porcelain catered to European tastes, and this large serving dish is a notable example. The musical scene, with a seated woman playing a dulcimer next to men playing a transverse flute and a large lute, is based on a French print dating to about 1700 and engraved by Nicolas Bonnart, who, along with his brothers, became well known for producing images of contemporary fashion.
Provenance[Otto M. Wasserman, New York, by January 31, 1948]; [Ginsburg & Levy, New York,1948–1949]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, November 21, 1949; given to MFAH, by 1966.
