DescriptionArtist Robert Havell, Jr. is best known as the principal engraver of the plates used in John James Audubon’s Birds of America. Havell became an associate of Audubon, eventually leaving England to reside in New York’s Hudson Valley, where he turned his talents to painting. Because it commanded a key point on the Hudson River, the prime route between New York City and Montreal, military professionals understood and valued West Point’s strategic significance, especially during the American Revolution. In 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation establishing the United States Military Academy at West Point.
