DescriptionHenry J. Pepper was born in Ireland and was likely the son of Henry Pepper, Sr., a schoolmaster who taught languages in Wilmington, Delaware, during the 1790s. In 1797, the father moved to Philadelphia, where he contracted yellow fever and died. His widow and children returned to Wilmington. Henry J. Pepper surfaced as a silversmith there with an advertisement in the Delaware Statesman, March 17, 1813. In 1825, Pepper moved to Philadelphia and opened a shop on Chestnut Street, where he continued making silver objects for another twenty-four years.
