DescriptionBy the 1820s, developing ceramic manufacturing technology made possible the forming and decorating of relief-molded wares in a single process. English potters created elaborate, high-relief images of many kinds, including scenic, floral, historical, literary, and biblical subjects, among others. This example features St. Peter on one side and the Holy Family on the other. The entire surface is covered with copper luster, with some additional embellishments in green paint or enamel.
ProvenanceMiss Ima Hogg; Estate of Miss Ima Hogg; given to MFAH, 1979.
