produced numerous self-portraits in his photographic series Daughters of Art History and Actresses. Borrowing the roles of female
archetypes from art and film, Morimura explored the ambiguities of gender by
using himself as the model in his photographs. To My Little Sister is his homage to Cindy Sherman. But, unlike
Sherman’s photographs in which Sherman becomes a Hollywood B-movie actress,
Morimura becomes Cindy Sherman herself, morphing her into a Japanese cultural
context.
