DescriptionGeorgia O’Keeffe’s first experiments with
pure abstraction had been works on paper.
With the encouragement of Alfred Stieglitz,
who had begun representing her work at his
gallery 291 in 1916, she shifted her production
to paintings characterized by tightly cropped
compositions, controlled brushwork, and
nuanced gradations of tone. She commented
on the nature of these works: “I found I could
say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t
say any other way—things I had no words for.”
