DescriptionThis expansive view of New Braunfels was produced in conjunction with the land promotion of an association of German noblemen, the Adelsverein, who founded settlements in Texas during the 1840s and 1850s. New Braunfels, the largest town, was named for Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, the president of the Adelsverein. This sweeping panorama of the Texas countryside is by Conrad Caspar Rordorf, a German engraver, etcher, and watercolorist. It affirms the observations recorded by one of his contemporaries, Doctor Ferdinand Roemer, who described the setting as “a beautiful and commanding view of the whole town, and of the neighboring hills, forests, and valleys, for several miles around.”
