DescriptionJean François de Vallée emigrated from France and attempted to establish a cotton mill in Virginia. When that venture proved unsuccessful, he worked as an artist, particularly of miniatures, working in Philadelphia, Charleston, New Orleans, and Boston.
ProvenanceWilliam C. Hogg (1875–1930); Estate of William C. Hogg; inherited by his brother, Mike Hogg (1885–1941), and sister-in-law, Alice Nicholson Hogg (1900–1977), later Alice Nicholson Hanszen, Houston; Estate of Alice Nicholson Hanszen; inherited by her niece, Alice C. Simkins, San Antonio; given to MFAH, 1999.
