DescriptionBeginning in 1980, Hiroshi Sugimoto traveled to distant corners of the world to photograph an uninterrupted expanse of sea and sky, always from a high vantage point. In every case, he framed the scene with the horizon perfectly bisecting his picture. In 1990 he began photo- graphing such scenes at night, often with moonlit exposures lasting hours. With flawless technique, Sugimoto’s seemingly simple photographs invite close examination and a meditative state of contemplation. “Every time I view the sea,” Sugimoto said, “I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing.”
