DescriptionWilliam Cadogan Simes was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the son of an English immigrant. After serving an apprenticeship with his brother-in-law Martin Perry, he established his own silversmithing shop in Portsmouth. Silversmiths were often among the wealthiest craftsmen and prominent in their communities. This miniature by an unknown artist is a testament to Simes’s success in his trade.
