In this intimate view of Alfred Stieglitz’s final gallery, probably taken shortly after his death, Dorothy Norman balanced a mournful sense of reverence for her subject with her modernist eye for the forms and geometry of architecture. A social activist, writer, and champion of the arts, as well as a protégé, assistant, and romantic partner of Stieglitz, Norman was instrumental in establishing An American Place and furthering Stieglitz’s ambitious modernist mission in his final years. On the table are wrapped bundles of "Twice a Year: A Semi-Annual Journal of Literature, the Arts and Civil Liberties," which Norman edited and published.
ProvenanceEstate of Dorothy Norman; given to MFAH, 1997.
