Verso of frame: "Sherrin, John R.I. 1819 (London) - 1896 (Ramscate) A fruit and flower painter who was one of William henry Hunts few known pupils. He was apprenticed to Samuel Smith, a jeweller, and later worked for the designers Howell and James and the diamond merchants Mathews and Peake. He was left a considerable fortune by A.N.W.S and N.W.S. in 1866 and 1879. A number of chrom-lithographs were made from his works. Daniel Sherrin, the landscape and shipping painter in oil and watercolour, who lived near Whitstable and was active between 1890 and 1912, may have been a relative. Examples: V.A.m.; Aberdeen A.G.; Blackburn A.G.; Cartwright Hall, Bradford City; A.G. Manchaster; Ulster Mus."
The work is signed in brown, lower right of the image: "Sherrin."
