James Van Der Zee devoted his
professional photographic practice primarily to producing studio portraits and
social events of people living in Harlem. But, before opening his studio in
Harlem in 1912, Van Der Zee photographed his family and friends in the rural
areas of Massachusetts and Virginia, including this intimate picture of his wife,
Kate, and their daughter, Rachel.
