ProvenanceIn France by 1804-1805, which can be inferred from strips from a French almanac of that date pasted on the back to the edges of the canvas

Acquired through a London dealer, J. R. Rutley, by James Ewing, Strathleven, Dumbartonshire, c. 1822-1824, and listed in an inventory of his collection as "Claude Lorraine No. 6" (manuscript belonging to Mrs. I.B.M. Hamilton, nee Ewing; a large 6 appears on the lining canvas)

Remained in family possession at Strathleven until sold anonymously by Mrs. Hamilton at Edinburgh, Dowell, 8 July 1949, No. 118, as by Claude
