DescriptionIn the 1700s, some sophisticated colonial Americans served punch, which was a mixture of spirits, fruit juice, sugar, and water with spice, most often nutmeg. A nutmeg grater quickly became an essential part of the punch equipage. This nutmeg grater has a cylindrical case containing a tubular grater.
ProvenanceKatharine Prentis Murphy (1882–1969); given to Miss Ima Hogg, 1960; given to MFAH, by 1966.
