DescriptionThe cross-axial design on a purple-red ground with a deep blue border and elaborate floral designs, scrolls, and arabesques in this rug are characteristic of the Herat design tradition. Herat carpets are the most ubiquitous of all surviving classical Persian carpet types and are prized for their lavish floral designs, complicated weave techniques, and fine woven materials. As in other classical Persian rugs, the border here crops rather than frames the continuous floral design of the central plane, thereby inviting the viewer to imagine a space beyond.
