DescriptionCartographer Henry Schenck Tanner was born in New York in 1786 and established his publishing company in Philadelphia. Among his achievements, Tanner is remembered as the publisher of Stephen F. Austin’s first map of Texas in 1830. This map, published in 1834, delineates “Austin’s Colony” within the Mexican state of Coahuila and Texas.
