DescriptionThis plate commemorates the Great Fire that struck New York City on the evening of December 16, 1835. As high winds fanned the flames, very low temperature and frozen water sources severely hindered efforts to fight the blaze. The fire destroyed some seventeen city blocks and nearly seven hundred buildings.
