DescriptionDiane Arbus’s honest and intimate photographs of people on the margins of society reveal what is extraordinary in the familiar and familiar in the extraordinary. During the last two years of her life, she photographed residents at two institutions for the developmentally disabled, most often outdoors and in moments of joy. Of the girl in the foreground here, Arbus wrote, “She bent her head to her knees and with an odd shiver somehow the rest of her followed in what looked like the first somersault.”
