DescriptionAn MIT professor of electrical engineering, Harold Edgerton transformed the stroboscope from a laboratory instrument into a common photographic device. About 1964, Edgerton photographed David Tork, a competitor in a major track-and-field meet held at the Boston Garden. To capture successive stages of Tork’s vault, Edgerton used a manually triggered flash synchronized with a special shutter that opened for each flash and then closed immediately to eliminate bright ambient light.
