Description

Although this coverlet cannot be dated precisely, it is known that General Lafayette revisited the United States in (see Inscribed). While the design can be related to woven coverlets by James Alexander (1770–1870), this example is probably the work of another weaver. The name G. Dimond on this textile (see Inscribed) could refer to an undiscovered weaver or a client.

Technical notes and description: Cotton warp and wool weft Jacquard double-weave cloth. In one wide panel of undyed cotton and dark blue wool, this coverlet was executed on a handloom with an attached Jacquard mechanism. The fancy central field has four-and-a-half medallions depicting parrot tulips and other blossoms, which are separated by nine bold two-dimensional blooms.
