DescriptionDuring the 1830s, 40s, and 50s, Staffordshire potters produced large numbers of transfer-decorated patterns that have come to be called “romantic,” as many incorporate fanciful or imaginary imagery. This covered dish, in a pattern called “William Penn’s Treaty,” depicts both Native American and European figures in just such an imaginary landscape that includes palm trees and vaguely Asian-looking structures.
ProvenanceMiss Ima Hogg; given to MFAH, 1972.
