Description

Shot from a low vantage point, closer to the perspective of the religious figurines that populate the space than of a human being, José Ney hides the larger context and suggests a giant figure in a miniature world. His human subject cautiously wades through a chaotic and enigmatic scene, his rough clothing seamlessly blending him into the ensemble of characters. This photograph captures the spirit of the early 1990s when, during a period of economic hardship, the government allowed religious practices to reemerge in public spaces after a long period of marginalization.
