Inscriptions, Signatures and Marks
Inscription: There is a segmented strip of paper affixed to the recto, bottom edge of the page. On the first segment is inscribed in pencil: "Columbia River Sep -26th- (no tear) / John K. Townsend". On the second segment is inscribed in pencil: "Sciurus Douglassii - / Douglass' Squirrel: (probably of Bachman) / Males 1. Female 2". On the third segment is inscribed the following in pencil: "New York May 28th - 1841- / Minnies Land Jany 27th -1843-". There is a gallery label on the verso of the frame: "Hirschl & Adler / Galleries, Inc. / 21 East 70th Street, New York, NY. 10021 / Artist: John James Audubon / (1785-1851) / Number: APG 15221D / Title: Douglass Squirrel / Medium: Watercolor on paper / size: 0 x 0 inches / Date: 1841". There is a framer's label on the verso of the frame: "Framed by / M. Knoedler & Co. / 556 Fifth Ave. / Bet 45th & 46th Sts. / New York / P F 47237".
