DescriptionIn this satirical allegory of the causes of the American Revolution, Father Time shows a magic lantern image to figures personifying the four continents. At the center of the image, an overheated teapot has nearly exploded, ejecting a liberty cap and a snake, symbolizing the American colonies. A rooster, an emblem of France, pumps a bellows that fans the fire beneath the teapot, suggesting French support for the American cause. Colonial troops, entering from the right pursue fleeing British troops on the left.
