Inscriptions, Signatures and Marks
The cup and the lid share two unidentified coats-of-arms, one large and one small. The larger arms are set near the top, front of the cup. The arms are divided into halves: a chevron dominates the right half while a cross is apparent in the lower left quadrant. On the top of each handle there is a replica of a leaf on each thumb piece. They seem to be common to exceptional London Huguenot silversmiths working in this era.
Engraved on bottom: 102-10
Marks include the letters PL for the maker’s hallmark; the image of Britannia; and the letter N for the year 1708. The lion’s head hallmark indicates that the cup and cover were made in London. The number 102.10, scratched into the underside of the cup’s base, is probably its weight, 102 ounces.
