DescriptionRobert Heinecken rarely took his own photographs. Instead, he appropriated and manipulated images from magazines, advertisements, and other media in order to question the nature of photography and issues in contemporary culture as well as to engage the element of chance in artistic creation. In the series, Recto/Verso, he used magazine pages as his negatives, which he contact printed, merging the images on both sides of the page into one composite. Fragmented language, advertisements, and elements of feature stories are interwoven in disconcerting and provocative images.
