ProvenancePossibly collection of John Bagford (1650-1716), then by transfer to British Library Department of Prints and Drawings [1]; Vaughn Foundation; on long-term loan at MFAH, 1987-2022; gifted to MFAH, 2022.

[1]. The faint ink B in the bottom left corner of the image somewhat resembles Lugt 4639, the collector’s mark of English antiquarian and bookseller John Bagford, who is noted for his collection documenting the history of typography. In the years following Bagford’s death, his collection was assembled into bound volumes that were, from 1753 on, kept in the British Library. By the time the Library’s Department of Prints and Drawings formed in 1808, many sheets had already been removed from these volumes, and over the following century large numbers of additional prints, manuscript pages, and drawings were withdrawn and transferred to Prints and Drawings from their original homes in the Department of Manuscripts or the Department of Printed Matter. The B initial identifying works as having belonged to Bagford was added not by Bagford himself, but by the British Library’s Prints and Drawings curators when such works were incorporated into their collection in 1814.
