From early in his career, Rob Amberg was interested in photography’s potential to be used as an implement of social change. When he moved to Madison County, North Carolina, in 1973, he began a decades-long project of making socially engaged documentary photographs of his new home and community, focusing on the interactions between rural agricultural life and the environment.
