DescriptionPanoramic, or scenic, wallpapers became popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Made only in France, these wallpapers were designed to entertain viewers with one large image, created from many panels, that covered all the walls of a room. This section from Les Rives du Bosphore shows scenes of Turkish figures relaxing along the banks of the Bosphorus River. Wallpapers like this did not repeat patterns, so thousands of woodblocks were needed to create the full design. They show the impressive skill of early French makers.
