DescriptionAn artisan used a lathe to make this bowl from a piece of burled wood. Burls grow on trees in response to stress, often insect or mold infestations, creating unusual, swirling grain patterns that cabinetmakers and others used for decorative effect.
ProvenanceA. Keyman, by June 17, 1955; [Ginsburg & Levy, 1955–1956]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, April 24, 1956; given to MFAH, by 1966.
