DescriptionGerman-born Henry William Stiegel came to Pennsylvania in 1750, first to Philadelphia and later to Lancaster County, where he prospered for a time as the master of an ironworks. From 1764 to 1774, using artisans recruited from Germany, he operated the American Flint Glass Manufactory in Manheim, Pennsylvania, one of the first glassworks in the colonies to produce fine quality glass. Among its products were small flasks or pocket bottles with a variety of blown molded patterns. This example features a pattern of vertical ribs.
